1) Microsoft Corp. named Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella as its new chairman, in place of John Thompson.
➨India-born Nadella, who replaced Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO in 2014, has been instrumental in scaling up the Redmond, Washington-based company's business including billion-dollar acquisitions like LinkedIn, Nuance Communications and ZeniMax.

2) The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed each year on June 17, as mandated by the United Nations, to combat the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas due to climate change and detrimental activities carried out by human beings which leave an adverse impact on the environment.
➨This year's theme for the United Nations' world day for fighting desertification and drought is "Restoration. Land. Recovery."

3) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) on "Deep Ocean Mission", with a view to explore deep ocean for resources and develop deep sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean resources.

4) The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has developed a device that can be used as a substitute for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP machine. Dubbed as "Jivan Vayu", the machine can deliver high flow oxygen up to 60 litres Per Minute (LPM).

5) Mukesh Sharma, a faculty at IIT Kanpur, has been appointed as an honorary member of World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global Air Pollution and Health - Technical Advisory Group (GAPH-TAG).
➙Sharma, associated with the civil engineering department at IIT Kanpur and an air quality expert, has melded rigorous research with policy engagement.

6) Flipkart has appointed a former partner at management consulting firm Bain & Co. Dinkar Ayilavarapu as its new head of strategy in a key hire by the Walmart-owned e-commerce firm.

7) In tennis, Rafael Nadal beat world number one Novak Djokovic to win a 10th Italian Open title on 16 May 2021.

8) As the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic subsides, the Centre has launched 'Project O2 for India' to step up production of medical oxygen to meet the potential increase in demand due to further waves of the pandemic.

9) Former Director of Press Information Bureau Chennai, C. Muthuvel aged 73 years passed away in Chennai.
➨He was under treatment at a private hospital for Covid 19. He was an officer in the Indian Information Service and had worked in All India Radio, Doordarshan, DAVP, DFP and also as Defence PRO, Chennai.

10) Polish teenager Iga Swiatek crushed Czech ninth seed Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-0 to win the Italian Open.
